This is a fun story that we love to tell…this building was originally built as a two-room schoolhouse in 1866. The structure was converted to a residence in the late 1800s and remained a residence for over a hundred years. In December of 1998 there was a catastrophic fire that nearly destroyed the structure.
The new owner came to Ewers Architecture to redesign the structure into two residences that would be used as rental property. We instead suggested that we restore the original schoolhouse into an office for Ewers Architecture, and build a separate 2-bedroom rental home attached to the rear of the structure (where a poor early addition had previously been erected). Fortunately, our client (and landlord) loved the idea almost as much as we did.
The result is this wonderful office that we get to work in every day, with soaring wood ceilings, views of South Table Mountain, nestled in the historic downtown area of Golden, within walking distance of my home, and we were instrumental in saving an important historic building. |
