OVERALL SITE PLAN

The Lowell Whiteman School is an independent college preparatory school with both residential students as well as day students.  Nestled in a beautiful mountain valley near Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the school has more than a dozen buildings constructed at various times over their 50-year history.  After reaching this half-century milestone, The Lowell Whiteman School selected Ewers Architecture to work with the school to help re-sculpt their campus to serve the students over the coming decades.

Through an intensive master planning process over a period of several months, Ewers Architecture worked with the school’s administrators, teachers, board of directors, parents, and students to envision the future of this well-respected school.  This master plan is the result of a successful collaborative process where all stakeholders shared their ideas and dreams.  This plan for the future includes:

§       A new academic center consisting of remodeled existing buildings plus a new 14,000 square foot building with an auditorium, dining hall, library, and more.

§       A new circulation system for vehicles on campus.  This allows a simple and effective circulation for cars, but keeps them on the outskirts of campus, maximizing the open space.

§       A new “front yard” for the campus, greatly increasing the street appeal of the school.

§       Two new boys dormitories, focusing on the south exposure for passive and active solar design.

§       Several new faculty houses at the edges of campus for faculty solitude as well as student safety by ringing the campus with adults.

§       Expanded interior and exterior spaces for student exercise and social activities.

§       A plan to increase the sustainability of the school through increased energy efficiency for existing buildings and full sustainable requirements for all new buildings.

§       A new unified architectural style that reflects the mountain setting, but does not lose the unique identity of the school.

Ewers Architecture was thrilled to work with the school to arrive at this plan, and we look forward to designing these substantial projects to provide all Whiteman students with an environment that will allow them to focus on their own future.
