SUSTAINABLE RENOVATION OF HISTORIC OFFICE

This building is a small jewel of a bygone era.  When the City of Golden asked us for help to create a new modern and efficient office from this historic shell they did not have to ask twice.  The City’s desire is not only to provide handicap accessibility and renovate the worn-out interior space, but also transform the building into a celebration of the important cemetery that it serves.  And with the City’s new emphasis on sustainable design and construction, they would like this project to be a study in energy efficiency and sustainability.

As currently designed, this building will be carbon neutral – it will produce as much energy as it consumes.  This will be accomplished by using only electric-based systems (no natural gas) and all of the electricity will be provided using the photovoltaic panels on the roof.  In addition the sustainable aspects will also include daylighting, low VOC materials, local materials, high efficiency mechanical systems, low water usage plumbing fixtures, and more.

In order to create a south-facing roof for the PV panels, the entire roof must be removed and rebuilt perpendicular to the current orientation.  While doing this, a band of clerestory windows will be added above the existing stone walls which will virtually eliminate the need for electric lighting.  The design is completed with a new stone patio and sweeping handicap ramp to establish a new outdoor space that can be enjoyed on almost any sunny day.

The City once considered abandoning this gem and moving into a modular office. Instead, with this project the cemetery and the City take a giant step forward to sustainability and timeless beauty.
