Sustainable Daylighting within the Telluride Mountain School

Through notoriety received from an award for the Compass Montessori School, the facilities committee for the Telluride Mountain School found and hired Ewers Architecture for their new school.  They had recently purchased a 10-year old building and needed to renovate the entire building to house their pre-school-through-twelfth-grade private school.

Ewers Architecture, of course, was ecstatic to be selected, and found themselves in the familiar role of seeing an entire school project from schematic design through construction in less than one year—and on a tight budget.  But this school will feature spectacular spaces and wonderful learning opportunities, including:

· A main corridor designed as a canyon, with angular, sloping walls with a continuous curving ribbon of daylit translucent clerestory above (see the model photo).

· An emphasis on creating different learning opportunities for the students, including outdoor classrooms, a large Commons for the students and all-school gatherings, built-in benches in the corridors, and more.

· Each classroom is individually and uniquely designed, such as an acoustically isolated music room for their Rock & Roll Academy style of music learning.

· Plans for future expansion to the neighboring property.

· Exposed mechanical, electrical, and structural systems for honesty, aesthetics, cost-savings, and learning opportunities.

· Rooftop playground with grass on a flat roof.

We are proud to know that that this new facility is one grand step toward fulfilling the school’s motto of “Laborate Dure, Ludite Dure” (Work Hard, Play Hard).

I have heard about such horrors from other schools, but I am still waiting for our first problem. We feel so fortunate to have found Ewers Architecture—they have designed the perfect space for our school.  What a blessing.
