Recycling Information

The Golden Section

I just began working at a Title company and we use a LOT of paper and a lot of it just gets trashed.  I have started recycling in our department and hope it will spread.  Thanks for letting me know where I can drop it off.

Ewers Architecture believes in recycling, and as avid recyclers we have come across some good ways to recycle in the Denver area.  We are sure that there are many, many more opportunities than those listed here -- this in not meant to be a comprehensive list, only a short list of some of the information we have found.

Most of the trash hauling companies in the area offer curbside recycling, usually for a small additional fee.  This is a great way to get rid of your newspapers, glass, cans, and some plastics.  They typically will take beverage glass containers, aluminum cans, and #1 and #2 plastics (most plastics are numbered from 1 to 6...the number is located inside a triangle usually on the bottom of the container).

If you want to step up to the next level, however, there are plenty of opportunities to recycle more of you discards...

Recycle America

3600 East 48th Avenue

Denver, Colorado 80216

www.recycleamerica.com

303.399.6351 x198

Recycle America (formerly Tri-R) is one of the main locations in this region that serves the general public and our recycling needs.  They have a great drop-off site at their main location at 3600 East 48th Avenue (just west of Colorado Boulevard and just north of I-70).
Some notes:
- They now have a single bin that accept all types of paper including white office paper, junk mail and magazines.  You can even include envelopes with plastic windows.
- They accept all types of cardboard, not just corrugated.  This includes cereal boxes and the like.
- They have a bin for plastic bags, but this is just for convenience - they are not recycled, they are simply thrown away.

Eco-Cycle

Boulder, Colorado

www.ecocycle.org

Eco-Cycle is a Boulder County non-profit organization that does an excellent job of recycling and promoting recycling at home and at the office.  Their website lists their 14 drop-off sites and has a complete list of what is recyclable at their centers.  Their main drop-off location at 5351 East Pearl Parkway accepts the most complete list of recyclables including many types of paper, cardboard, metal, glass containers, and plastics #1, #2 and even #5.  They now also take clean, dry plastic (grocery) bags labeled #2 or #4 and block foam (styrofoam).

Albertson's Grocery Stores

Albertson's Grocery Stores have bins for recycling plastic shopping bags.  These bags are taken to their distribution center and recycled into plastic benches and other items that are used at their stores.

Unwanted Appliances Hauled Away

www.unwanted.com

303.430.7142

For a small fee, this company will come and pick up old refrigerators, water heaters, washers and dryers and more.  In many locations across the country, it is  actually illegal to dispose of these items in landfills, but in Colorado that is not the case.  Appliances have such a high content of metal that it is very economical to recycle that metal.

Oxford Recycling

2400 West Oxford Avenue

Englewood, Colorado

80110

www.oxfordrecycling.com

303.762.1160

This company offers recycling for asphalt, concrete, tires and wood products.  Their fee is typically less than fees charged by landfills, and they recycle the products.  If you are doing any type of construction, please encourage your contractor to use this facility, or other similar facilities.

Sustainable Design Resource Guide

AIA Denver Committee on the Environment

The Sustainable Design Resource Guide is a book written by Denver's American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment.  This guide has been in book form for several years and is now available in its entirety on the AIA Colorado website.  The first chapter of the book is an excellent reference for recycling in the front range.  This web page lists many of the recycling centers all over Colorado and what type of material they accept.  The list includes construction material recycling in addition to home and office recycling.

There are still a lot of items that we cannot recycle, at least not in the Denver area.  Among many other items, these include plastics 3, 4, and 6, and  some styrofoam.  The best course of action here is to find a second use for these items (re-use is always better than re-cycle), not use the products that come in these containers, or refuse to frequent those places where non-recyclable items are used.
