The children of Juarez, Mexico are so fortunate to have a man like John Walker looking out for them.  John has given his life to creating a children’s home for kids who do not have anywhere else to turn – whether they are homeless for a few days or for a lifetime.  The Arbol de Vida (Spanish for “tree of life”) is currently a ragged collection of buildings that are in need of repair or replacement, but John manages to use these spaces to spread a message of love to these abandoned children.

So when Ewers Architecture was asked to donate our services to prepare a master plan for their 12 acre campus, we gladly accepted the challenge.  Through Peter Ewers’ prior connection to Engineering Ministries International, this organization was brought in to lead the entire effort, with Peter being the lead architect on the design team.  With an incredible team of engineers and a landscape architect from all over the country, we traveled to Juarez in March 2008, completed the master plan design, and completed the design of the first building – a new Cultural Center.

The Cultural Center is strategically placed on the edge of the embankment looking north toward the United States, with the desert and the diminutive Rio Grande below.

The stunning view of the distant mountains, a plaza leading up to the building, and an amphitheater leading down the escarpment, are all meant to assure these forgotten children that they are worthy of this beauty.

The Cultural Center is designed to inspire the children of Arbol de Vida to reach their full potential and God-given talents for art and expression.  A sweeping curved wall on the second floor, the flow to outside plazas and rooftop terraces, and glass walls to maximize the breathtaking views are all symbols of the hope and promise that lies within each person.

Inside the building, the main floor provides a new kitchen, dining hall, and central restrooms, with classrooms on the upper two floors to learn and experience all forms of art.  Within these spaces lives will be transformed, artists will be discovered, and these children will learn that they are unique and beautiful.

"Peter, like all of the volunteers on the trip, took time away from their busy schedules, at their own cost, to use their talents and design skills to help bring hope to this developing nation.  Peter , as the lead design professional, working with limited resources and an extremely short time span, was able to guide the team to complete a proposed facility pleasing to the ministry we served.  It has been my pleasure to work with Peter who has and shows his passion for his profession and all that he does."
