Cusmapa is a small town nestled in the mountains of northern Nicaragua, and the Fabretto campus there is a beacon of hope to these 2000 residents.  Father Fabretto began working with the children of Nicaragua four decades ago, and his legacy lives on through five campuses which give meals, education and hope to the children.

Father Fabretto had built the original Teatro Alpino as not much more than a shack, and the structure finally succumbed to a storm a few years ago.  This left the town without a performance space where they could watch their children demonstrate the joys of music and dance that they learn at the Fabretto programs.

The new Teatro Alpino will be a sturdy, permanent structure which will be the largest gathering space in Cusmapa, seating more than 500 in a soaring performance hall with an elevated stage.  The main space will be surrounded by studio rooms for small classes and rehearsal—and these studio spaces can be transformed to become a part of the performance hall for overflow seating.  Larger rehearsal rooms flank the stage area, becoming the backstage area during performances.

Fabretto Cusmapa also boasts an evergreen forest which is used to harvest lumber, and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as sustainable.  Though wood is not often used as a construction material in Nicaragua due to termite problems, this project will showcase some of the Cusmapa wood in the roof trusses (where the termites will not reach).  Wood windows and doors will also be crafted by young artisans learning their trade and hope for tomorrow.

Through the opportunities and architecture of this structure, there is new hope in Cusmapa, Nicaragua.

Peter Ewers worked as a volunteer and missionary through Engineering Ministries International to design this project.  Peter traveled to Nicaragua in June, 2005 to see the site, the people and the love that abounds in this beautiful country.  For more information or donations, visit www.fabretto.org or www.emi.org.

"Peter, like all of the volunteers on the trip, took time away from their busy schedules, at their own cost, to use their talents and design skills to help bring hope to this developing nation.  Peter , as the lead design professional, working with limited resources and an extremely short time span, was able to guide the team to complete a proposed facility pleasing to the ministry we served.  It has been my pleasure to work with Peter who has and shows his passion for his profession and all that he does."
