Some projects just never go as planned.  But that doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful.  Josh Berg and Kim Giunta arrived at our office after they had already poured the foundation for their addition, without a permit.  Understandably, they were eager to get going as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately they poured the foundation within the setback (too close to the property line).

Three years later, after purchasing a strip of land from their neighbor (twice), replatting nearly the entire city block, and obtaining a variance, we were able to begin construction.  Despite these setbacks, Josh & Kim never lost hope and did not lose sight of their goal.

The final design was all they dreamed and more.  This 1000 square foot concrete block home has been transformed into a modern home including a great room with vaulted ceiling, dining room, library, office, master suite, and a two car garage.  More importantly, the simple design of the 80-year old existing home was the catalyst for the design of the addition.  There was a symbiotic relationship created so that the addition does not appear as an addition. Three separate volumes work together to create a single whole, creating a pleasing composition that looks neither historic nor modern, but blends well with the historic neighborhood and the modernistic leanings of the owners.
