This home was designed as a second home in the Winter Park area with plans that it would be used full-time after the owners retire. The slope of the site allowed for a tuck-under garage and a walk-out lower level. The view and slope on this site both faced north creating a challenge to provide direct sun light in the north-facing great room. This was accomplished by designing a tall ‘mine shaft’ on the south part of the house with high windows and large overhangs to allow winter sun to pass directly into the great room, while shading the summer sun. The effect creates a wonderful sunfilled living space, even though the this main space faces north. A part of the ‘mine shaft’ also extends up to a fourth story creating a lookout loft area above the roofs of the rest of the house. The lookout has a 360° view of the surrounding mountains, as well as overlooking the upper and main floor spaces below. The exterior design emphasizes the interior layout: · The “mineshaft” is the entrance, main staircase, and kitchen. The sloped glass wall at the breakfast nook emphasizes the shaft and salutes visitors to the home. · The main living space is a single volume, with the garage below, and boasts a gracious curving deck to soften the approach to the home as well as hides the garage doors. · The bedroom wing contains the bulk of the spaces, but is tucked behind the other main spaces. This volume is graciously clad with reclaimed barnwood siding. With low maintenance exterior materials, graceful soaring interior spaces, and the wamth ot the sun, this home will be enjoyed for many years to come. |
