This home soars.  Amid the swaying aspen, hovering over the sloping hill, admiring the mountain view.  The Conrads did not buy a parcel of land, they bought a view – south facing, gazing upon the snow capped Rocky Mountains.  And the only requirement for this house was that it responded to the scenery.

There were perhaps a few more requirements for the design – accommodate their family of four, a piano room, a large garage, open spaces but with enough separation for kids to be kids without disrupting the rest of the family, and provide comfort in the harsh mountain environment.  Oh yes, and the house had to generate its own electricity.

When approaching this house the first element that is noticed are the roofs echoing the jagged mountain peaks, designed to evoke emotion as well as provide the optimum orientation for photovoltaic panels (to turn the sun’s energy into electricity).  The garage, though large, tucks nicely out of view, and your eye is drawn to the entrance – a metal grate bridge to the cantilevered front porch.

Once inside the house, the full spectrum of the spectacular view unfolds.  The open spaces with soaring ceilings feel incredible.  The living areas command the best view, and the main floor master suite peaks at the view while also enjoying being nestled among the aspen.  The lower floor is set back from the upper floor, enabling the wonderful soaring feeling above, and contains two bedrooms and a family room opening out to the landscape.

Through use of structural insulated panels, high levels of insulation, natural materials, and careful integration of mechanical and electrical systems, this house will provide this family respite through all the mountain seasons as well as the seasons of their lives.
