From the very beginning we knew this project was going to be something special.  The clients came to us with a sense of adventure and open minds, which allowed us to incorporate some unusual design elements.  Also, the site is south facing with a view towards open space and mountains beyond, which is perfect for passive solar design.

The main organizing feature of the design is a 100-foot long curving stone wall that snakes it way through the house.  THE WALL pierces the exterior skin of the house to embrace the hot tub on the east end and an outdoor garden on the west end.  THE WALL ties together the three major building blocks of the home – the kitchen/garage structure, the master suite/office structure, and the open living area in between.  THE WALL is also a barrier that separates the smaller spaces such as bathrooms, foyer, mud room and laundry to the north, allowing the sunsoaked south side spaces to open toward the view.

On the exterior, the gracious front porch provides a large covered space to invite guests or take off the snow shoes, while the south deck runs almost the entire length of the house to provide an outdoor space that is an extension of the interior living areas.

Unique aspects of this house include:

· Passive solar design, which heats the house almost entirely with natural sunlight.

· A polished concrete slab across the entire main floor soaks up the sun and provides the thermal storage needed to provide heat for nighttime and prolonged cloudy days.

· A fireplace patterned after the Cat in the Hat, and windows that appear as marbles rolling down the porch roof had to be deleted due to financial considerations.

"The team at Ewers Architecture was a pleasure to work with on the design of our mountain house.  The original design, with the stone wall winding throughout the structure, is beautiful as well as practical.  They listened carefully to all of our ideas, even when we only thought we knew what we wanted, and incorporated everything we really wanted into the final design."
