This house is tucked into the foothills west of Boulder, Colorado with a wonderful view of the mountains to the north.  The owners had a great desire for a home that would feature as many sustainable design features as possible.  Designing a sustainable home with a north-facing view is an enormous challenge, because passive solar design requires south-facing windows, not north.

Ewers Architecture responded to this challenge by providing high south windows on the front of the house, which allow the winter sun to penetrate across the loft and down to the living room.  We also designed a wonderful dining room which is a sun-drenched space facing back into the hill (this is the architect’s favorite room in the house).

The house also features:

-Great room with a high, interesting ceiling without being two full stories.  The exposed beams, wood floor, stone fireplace, curving staircase and an overlooking loft all combine to make this room special without being too large and cavernous.

-Bright and open kitchen between the dining and living rooms, so the cook is an integral part of the main living areas of the home.

-Three-car garage broken up with a side-load single door to downplay the importance of the garage on the exterior.

-Master suite designed as a retreat area with private deck.

-Children’s bedrooms with Jack & Jill bathroom.

-Finished basement includes wine cellar and climbing wall.

-Wrap-around curving deck creates two distinct outdoor spaces.

-Sustainable materials and systems include cement-fiber siding, radiant floor heat, bamboo flooring, low-VOC finishes, and more.

"Our house is nicer than we could possibly have hoped.  Everyone who comes here is amazed at the ease of flow and attention to detail that was put into the house.  We can't thank you enough for creating not just a house, but the home that we plan to live in for the rest of our lives."
