Accessory Dwelling Unit
This project involved the design of a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) connected to the existing home. The goal was to create a comfortable and private space for visiting family members while maintaining a cohesive relationship with the original house.
The new ADU includes one bedroom, a dedicated office, two bathrooms, and a single-car garage. Because the existing home features red brick, the design carefully incorporates similar materials so the new structure feels like a natural extension of the property rather than a separate addition.
Outdoor living was also an important part of the design. Decks on both the front and rear of the ADU provide outdoor space to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The rear deck in particular takes advantage of the elevated site, capturing expansive views of downtown Golden.
A practical feature of the design is the connection between the garage and the lower level of the residence. This allows residents or guests to park in the garage and enter the home directly, providing convenience and protection from the elements.
The ADU was created for a young couple who purchased the property and wanted a welcoming place for their parents to stay while visiting Colorado. The result is a flexible living space that supports family connections while adding long-term value and functionality to the property.
